Month-end petrol increase

JOBURG – Motorists should expect a fuel increase due to the weak rand and international prices.

Fuel prices in the country are expected to rise by the end of May, due to the weak rand and stronger international prices.

Automobile Association (AA) spokesperson Layton Beard said that this is the view of the AA, that was commenting on the unaudited mid-month fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF).

Beard said that they are expecting a 39 cent per litre increase by the end of this month, with the stronger oil accounting to 23 cents of the rise and the weaker rand contributing 16 cents.

“Motorists have been fortunate in 2016 so far, with lower oil prices buffering the country from the weaker rand. However, oil has now strengthened while the rand continues to decline, with both contributing to the current under-recovery picture,” said Beard.

He added that while oil prices are rising steadily, South African users have lost their protection against the rand’s ongoing weakness.

The AA offers motorists some useful tips on how to save petrol:

  • Make sure your car is in good working condition, to avoid over use of petrol
  • Leave earlier to avoid traffic, which increases petrol consumption
  • Avoid using the aircon when it is unnecessary
  • Drive with closed windows, open windows causes the car to drag.
