Passengers are mugged on taxis

BRIXTON – Commuters are warned to keep valuables hidden while in taxis.

Police confirmed that several mugging incidents were reported involving commuters in taxis.

Brixton Police spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff, said that there have been a few cases reported where three to four men use firearms and knives to rob taxi passengers of phones, jewellery and groceries.

The areas where the incidents were reported are Brixton, Hursthill, Crosby and Auckland Park.

“Community members are requested to be more vigilant before they get into a taxi,” said Backhoff.

Captain Alex Vermaak of Linden Police said that similar incidents have been reported to the Linden Police Station. Capt Vermaak said that it is the routes usually going to town such as Beyers Naudé Drive. He said that some staff in Randburg who leave work later hours were also robbed in a taxi.

Parkview Police spokesperson Sergeant Iris Phoko said that they have not experienced this problem as yet.

The police are urging the community to be careful and avoid flashing any valuable goods inside taxis.
