Petrol to increase by 12 cents per litre

JOBURG – The Department of Energy announced that the petrol price will once again increase due to national and international factors.

The Department of Energy announced that the price of fuel will be adjusted and this will take effect from 4 May.

The Department said that based on current local and international factors, the fuel price will be adjusted as follows:

• Diesel (0.05 per cent sulphur) – decrease by 1 cent per litre

• Diesel (0.005 per cent sulphur) – Decrease by 2 cents per litre

• Petrol 95 and 93 Octane (both ULP and LRP) – increase by 12 cents per litre

• Illuminating paraffin – decrease by 9 cents per litre

• Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LGP) – decrease by 5 cents per kg

The Department announced that South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted on a monthly basis, affected by international and local factors. International factors include the fact that South Africa imports both crude oil and finished products at a price set at the international level, including shipping costs.

According to the Department of Energy, the main reasons for the fuel price adjustments of May include the average increase in the prices of petroleum products in the international markets of about 40 cents per litre for petrol and 20 cents per litre for diesel. Another reason includes the strengthening of the Rand against the US dollar during the period under review, which cushioned the price adjustments by over 25 cents per litre.

The price of petrol increased more significantly than the price of diesel due to a higher demand for petrol in the USA and Europe.
