Spread the love with sandwiches

VICTORY PARK – Bread, peanut butter and jam will be in mass at King David Victory Park Primary School on 12 May.

King David Victory Park Campus plans to break a Guinness World Record next month by making between 30 000 and 32 000 peanut butter and jam sandwiches in an hour.

In partnership with the South African Board of Jewish Education, the South African Zionist Federation and Feed SA , King David Victory Park Campus along with its Linksfield sister school and other organisations will attempt this feat, formally named #spreadthelove, on 12 May. The current record is 26 717 sandwiches in one hour.

The sandwiches will be distributed to causes around Johannesburg with the help of Feed SA, a non-profit organisation who establishes feeding schemes in townships. Feed SA is responsible for monthly handouts that ensure individuals in the supported townships get two nutritious meals a day. “We are currently feeding 6 000 people a day in and around the country and the sandwiches we will collect from King David Victory Park, can go a long way,” said director of Feed SA, Genevieve Nathan. The sandwiches made at King David will be distributed to the Alexandra township.

Headmaster of King David Victory Park Primary, Rabbi Ricky Seeff, said, “We are grateful for the support of Pick n Pay and their suppliers Hugo, RCL Foods and Premier Foods and excited to engage more people in the fight against childhood hunger. The event is a terrific opportunity for our community to come together with the express aim of making a small difference in the lives of thousands of South African children.”

Seeff is confident they will be able to produce enough sandwiches on the day, however, the Guinness World Records has some tough criteria, one of which is sandwich quality. “The toughest part will be ensuring the quality of the sandwich fits the requirements as we will be having four-year-old children making sandwiches,” Seeff added.

The school pupils, staff, parents and community members are expected to participate on the day with an estimated 3 000 individuals making sandwiches. A trial run was attempted on 10 April, where 50 pupils, staff and parents made 370 sandwiches in eight minutes.

The day also marks National Israel Day, which commemorates Israeli’s declaration of independence. A carnival will be held in celebration after the sandwich-making.
