WATCH: Canoe champion helps beginners get their balance

EMMARENTIA – Anybody can go canoeing on the Emmarentia Dam with only a bit of practice.

Young and old now have the chance to find their balance in a canoe with the help of champion canoeist Sandile Mogoea and the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club in Emmarentia.

Magoea welcomed beginner canoeists for a class on the Emmarentia Dam on 2 April. He explained the fundamentals of canoeing to every participant, showed them the mechanisms of the canoe and how to use the paddle.

According to Magoea, canoeing is beneficial for the body as well as the mind. “It works the entire body especially calves, upper arms and stomach,” said Magoea. He added that canoeing is very beneficial if you are stressed. “While canoeing you only have to think about canoeing and concentrate on what you are doing. You can’t think about anything else,” said Magoea.

He added that it is very good for people to do activities outdoors and enjoy the great weather. The two men that participated in the beginner’s class lost their balance and tumbled over. Magoea explained that usually female beginners pick up on the sport faster, not only because they weigh less, but because of their hips and hip movement. “Women can balance themselves easier, because of their looser hips,” said Magoea.

Travis Raft was a young participant that had his first lesson on 31 March. He quickly picked up on the sport and according to his father, Terence Raft it is because he loves doing any kind of water sport.

Magoea has 15 years of canoeing experience under his belt and has done the Dusi Canoe Marathon ten times. He also works in the canoe shop at the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club.
