Marang House creates home for sick children

NORTHCLIFF – Staff of Marang House make it their goal to give children a normal life and teach them how to look after themselves.

In 1998 a new charity was founded by the late Dr Pieter Ernst to give hope to children who suffer from chronic implications associated with renal failure, lung disease, cardiac disease and diabetes.

Marang House in Northcliff can house 13 children at a time, ranging from ages 4 to 14 years and offers long-term care. Since the house opened its doors in 1998, about 100 children received care at this house. Each child’s situation differs, but for many of the children’s parents it is not possible to care for the special needs that these children require. According to administrator, Melanie Tennant they strive to make the house feel as homely as possible for the children.

Matron, Salome Parkies stays with some of the children in their room as they would need care in the evening. “I started working here in 2001 and took care of many children,” said Parkies, She added that there are many difficulties regarding her role. “It is a very difficult time when the child comes to Marang for the first time,” said Parkies.

She explained that they do not like it when they have to follow a strict diet , which is necessary to combat their sicknesses, but they quickly learn to accept it as it is for the best. “The sad part of my job is when a child passes away. In the time that I have been here about three children passed away,” said Parkies. She added that it is however, very rewarding when a child gets healthy enough to go home and take care of themselves.

Parkies would like to advise children with these diseases to never give up. “We would like to encourage parents to come and visit their children while they need to stay in Marang House,” added Parkies.

Tennant said that there is always a need for donations from the community to be used in the house or to be sold in the Marang House Charity Shop to generate funds.
