Fairland Police warn residents of car jamming

Fairland Police handed out pamphlets to warn residents about ensuring their cars were locked when parking.

The pamphlets were handed out at McDondalds on Pendoring Road on 8 March.

Fairland spokesperson Constable Moloko Kgatla, said that incidences of car jamming were on the rise in the area simply because residents do not check their car.

“We are reminding residents to physically ensure that they have locked their cars after pressing the remote. We have made a few arrests recently, however the incidences are continuing,” Const Kgatla said.

He also added that residents who drove Toyota, Volkswagen and especially Polo vehicles must be on the alert as they were the likeliest to get hijacked.

“We suspect that these models of cars are being stolen for their parts as they are the most popular at the moment,” he speculated.

He suggested that residents should rather park their cars inside their garages and added that criminals drove around to identify possible targets.

Const Kgatla put forward the notion that residents should add additional security features to their cars such as tracker devices or steering locks.

He pointed out Heathway Shopping Centre, Northcliff Corner, McDonalds on Pendoring as hot spots for car remote jamming.

Phumla Matabane said that she always checked her car and ensured that it was physically locked because she was aware of jammers in the area.

Elri Thoresson said that she became aware of car remote jamming in the area from a page on Facebook and was glad that the police were reminding her to always check that her car was locked.

“I know that it is a reality that there are car jammers in this area, I will ensure from now on that I always check my car after pressing the remote,” she said.
