Bad boy turned good, in new film

MELVILLE – Melville resident and actor, Altus Theart talks about his experience in new film, Modder en Bloed.

A man with a light blue shirt, wooden framed sunglasses and beanie walks onto the deck of the Atlas studios in Auckland Park where he is set to shoot yet another season of the well-known Afrikaans series, Getroud met Rugby where he plays the confident, ladies’ man, Fafa Beltrame.

Although Altus Theart is known for his role as a rugby player in Getroud met Rugby, but this is not where his career started. His first role was as the kind-hearted, Henk Landman in Kruispad. Theart does not only play in TV shows, but also played in his share of movies. He was the bad-boy, in the film, Bakgat. Theart said that his favorite stage role was as Lappies Labuschangne in the stage production, Treëaan.

“I cannot choose between TV and stage as they both have their rewards. In TV viewers can dig into the character to get the best out of it. On stage you get immediate response from the audience,” said Theart. His latest movie role is as Daniel Yster Malherbe in the new film, Modder en Bloed. Theart calls this his most challenging role thus far.

“Malherbe has a very sad background. His biggest struggle is his internal struggle and the ghost of his past.” Theart added that its good to play a good guy for a change as he tends to always be the bad boy. Theart described his experience in the film, Modder en Bloed as an amazing one. “The cast and crew was spectacular. We had to get in to water with a temperature of two degrees. The crew got into the water with us,” said Theart.

He advised people to take tissues along when they go to watch Modder en Bloed. “This movie shows a very big part of South African heritage. Its about never giving up,” said Theart.

He explained that the good thing about acting is that it gives one a platform to be angry, to be more confident and to say things that one would not normally say. “There is a bit of Altus in all the roles I play. It’s either a more intense or less intense Altus,” concluded Theart.

Modder en Bloed will hit cinemas on 1 April.
