Carol Mulamu, newly appointed captain at Hawks

LINDEN – Captain Carol Mulamu is humbled by her promotion and says that she still has a lot to offer to the police.

Well-known Linden Police corporate communications officer Constable Carol Mulamu was promoted to captain at the Hawks, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) recently.

Mulamu studied at All Saints SAPS College in the Eastern Cape. After successfully completing her training, she was deployed to the Linden Police Station for the field training programme in 2009.

In January 2011 after she had completed her field training, then station commander, the late Colonel Mabalane Mohale appointed her to take up a post in Communication and Social Crime Prevention. Mulamu later successfully completed her national diploma in public relations management, majoring in PR and communication science at Unisa.

“Apart from admiring the police uniform, I have always wanted to help the voiceless and the distressed communities, which did not believe and trust that the police could help them,” said Mulamu. All the outreach programmes and public engagement successes helped her relationship with the community.

Mulamu said that support from colleagues has been amazing and that communication is not a one-man show, you need all the help and guidance you can get.

One of her best achievements was when she was nominated second runner-up at the first Annual National Batho Pele Excellence Awards in 2013 as the Best Public Service Frontline Employee of the Year, hosted by then Minister for DPSA, Honourable Lindiwe Sisulu.

Mulamu also dabbled in broadcasting. From 2002 she worked at community radio stations including Alex FM, Radio Midrand and Voice of Tembisa FM broadcasting and reading news. She is still involved in broadcasting, she reports incidents and successes for the greater Johannesburg area every Thursday on SABC Radio Phalaphala FM.

Mulamu decided to leave Linden Police because she felt that it was about time to learn something new. “I would like to be a communications specialist one day and also to own a PR company. I’m not planning to leave the police anytime soon. I still have a lot to offer to my organisation and I am humbled by the promotion,” she said. She also plans to complete her honours degree in communication science soon.

Captain Alex Vermaak from Linden Police Station said, “Carol is a very committed and positive individual and she made it easy for us to work with her, her qualification also counted in her favour.” He concluded that the station wishes her well and that they hope that she will continue to hold their name up high.
