Residents irked by state of Albertskroon pool

ALBERTSKROON – Residents are complaining about the poor state of the public swimming pool in Albertskroon.

Residents are tired of the state of the public swimming pool and are fed up with complaining to no avail.

Desiree Mansfield said that she had sent seven emails to the Aquatics Department of the City of Joburg to no avail since 2013.

Mansfield complained about the loose tiles in the baby pool even though it had previously been repaired several times. “When I took my grandson to the pool, he discovered that the drain cover was not over the drain and subsequently found it and put it back,” she explained.

Mansfield said that the grass at the pool was not regularly cut and was left to grow long before it was tended to. She added that the state of the men’s toilets left a lot to be desired and complained that the toilet door had a huge hole in it. “The urinal is still not working and does not have a cover on top and there is a layer of sand at the bottom of the pool,” she pointed out.

A worker who works at the pool said that it had been three weeks since the toilets had been blocked and yet residents continued to use the blocked toilets which she had to clean.

“I do not even have protective gear and I have to work with germs, sometimes residents even throw their dirty sanitary towels on the floor. There is no health and safety here,”she lamented.

Ward 86 Councillor Steve Kotzé said maintenance at the pool has been an issue for some years now and that he had gone to lengths to have senior officials present at the pool to raise this issue. “The execution of the work done has been extremely poor and project supervision leaves a lot to be desired. Specifics that should be adhered to appears non-existent because no one checks that the work is done correctly before the contractor is paid,” Kotzé added.

He pointed out that the tiles in the baby pool had been repaired up to four times and even now needed to be repaired again which meant more money will have to be spent.

Questions were sent to Nthatise Modingoane, the City’s deputy director of communications. No answered has been received yet.
