Father cycles for son’s cancer

NORTHCLIFF – Local cyclist Steve Brookes prepares to cycle the Cape Argus race in support of his son.

Local resident Steve Brookes, has joined The Cows, a cycling organisation in partnership with the Childhood Cancer Foundation SA (Choc).

Brookes will participate in the Cape Argus cycle race on 7 March, dressed as a cow to raise funds for the foundation. The Cows and Choc support children and their families through the process of diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Brookes’ son was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in July 2015. Brookes said,” I thought this was a marvelous opportunity to do something for him since we would have cycled the Cape Argus together.” Brookes is an enthusiastic cyclist but has never attempted a road race before but is training hard by going on cycles from Northcliff to the Cradle of Humankind.

Brookes aims to raise R6 000 for Choc and plans to cycle with a picture of his son on his helmet. He has managed to raise R2 500 already. “It is a good cause. All I can do is be positive and hope he will be okay. It has been an extremely traumatic time and to support charity is the only way to stay positive,” Brookes added.

Brookes’ wife is the administrator of Wishing Wells Nursery School and Baby Care in Cresta. Wishing Well will also raise funds for Choc through a fun mini bike race.
