JRA enters second phase of construction on the M1

PARKTOWN – JRA enters the second phase of rehabilitation on Oxford Road, Federation Road and Double Decker, and M1 highway.

As work on the M1 freeway continues the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has announced that they are almost ready to enter into the second phase of the road rehabilitation programme that they embarked on last year November. JRA held a media briefing at Emoyeni Conference Centre in Parktown.

The MMC for Transport with the City of Joburg Christine Walters said that the phase they were about to embark on was extremely important as it connected the City and was used to get commuters to the north, south, Cape Town and even Pretoria. “We need to fix the joints, storm water drains as well as the asphalt resurfacing and this is very costly and is part of the R110 billion allocated for the rehabilitation and maintenance project,” Walters said.

She pointed out that the road that they were responsible for stretched over 13 000km and included 890 bridges which was a big task.

“We are pleading with commuters to be patient during this process as this project entails a lot of work and there are many challenges that we are facing,” she added.

“The Executive Mayor Parks Tau is pleading with all road users to familiarise themselves with the road closures and they must budget an additional 30 minutes when leaving in the mornings,” she further explained.

She added that during this time road users should resort to using public transport such as the Rea Vaya bus services, MetroRail, MetroBus, Gautrain as well as taxis in order to avoid traffic due to the road works currently being undertaken.

JRA acting managing director Mpho Kau reiterated that all road users should adhere to the rules of the road and pointed out that JRA has employed tow trucks to clear accident scnes quickly to keep the traffic flowing.

“We have partnered with several key stake holders such as Sanral and JMPD. Sanral will be posting updates of delays and inform the public of any eventualities on the road. There will also be information available through Twitter, Facebook and the website.
