GALLERY: Lion roar in the library

PARKTOWN - Children learn theatre etiquette and the importance of the library with the Library Lion production at the National Children's Theatre.

“Shhh don’t make a noise in the library.” The National Children’s Theatre in Parktown presents The Library Lion, which will be on stage until 26 February.

At a recent performance, the theatre was packed with eager school children waiting for the show to start. The theatre was transformed from a place with lights and seats to a public library with books and strict rules. Mister McBee, played by Kabelo Lethoba, came in with song and dance, explaining to the young audience the rules of a library. The children laughed and clapped when three young actors (Tlotlego Mabitsi, Tlhopilwe Mabitsi and Tlholego Mabitsi) not much older than them, visited the library only to break the rules.

They were later joined by the head librarian, Miss Merri Weather, played by Kayli Smith, and the Story Lady, played by Veronique Mensah. The play made for a thrilling turn when the lion (Gamelihle Bovana) peeked into the theatre from a side door. The audience screamed and laughed out of confusion at the big, furry, yellow lion. He sat down and waited for someone to read him a story.

If one listened carefully, many life lessons can be learned from the play: A situation may sound scary if not known, but it might turn out to be harmless if given a chance. The lights, sound, choreography and music – everything was of a high standard and ideal to teach children the etiquette of theatre.

Francois Theron is the artistic director for the show with Willie van Staden as the stage manager .
