Fibre on your doorstep

AUCKLAND PARK – Fibre network roll-out for residents to begin in March and will carry on until August.

Residents in Auckland Park, Melville, Westdene and Brixton cannot wait to have access to faster internet.

The roll-out of fibre is set to begin in March and will carry on until August.

Andrew Marais, member of the Greater Melville Fibrehood (GMF) committee, said this is a community-based project in which the fibre network Vumatel will work closely with the communities covered by the GMF during the roll-out period.

He said residents living in Auckland Park and Brixton should check whether they fall within the area to be covered by Vumatel, by checking under Auckland Park on the Vumatel website.

Westdene residents should check under Westdene as not all areas in Westdene will be covered.

He said it is important that residents of all areas covered by the GMF, who have not yet indicated their interest in obtaining fibre. do so on Vumatel’s website (www.vumatel.servicezones.net) to ensure that their area receives priority in the roll-out process.

“Vumatel will connect every home and apartment building with a fibre box on the boundary wall,” he said.

Marais said once the Vumatel fibre technician has installed the fibre to the resident’s home, the resident will be able to choose from a wide range of service providers for data and voice packages.

He said once the fibre is in the ground, residents will be able to connect to internet speeds of over 1Gb (gigabit) per second.

“The high speed fibre broadband connectivity means improved lives by way of improved communications,” he said.

He added that there are large numbers of students and university academics residing in the area who make frequent use of the internet to source information for study and research.
