GALLERY: De La Salle Holy Cross College collects 8 000 litres

VICTORY PARK – De La Salle Holy Cross College collects 8 000 litres of water for their sister school in Aliwal North.

De La Salle Holy Cross College collected 8 000 litres of water on 20 January.

Debbie Harris, principal of the school in Victory Park, explained that their sister school, Holy Cross School in Aliwal North, Eastern Cape, recently contacted them claiming they do not have drinking water at the school and that some pupils only have access to contaminated water at home.

“Once I heard this, I appealed to all parents, pupils, staff and neighbouring schools – [Blairgowrie Primary School and Delta Park School ] – to collect water for the school and community members of Aliwal North,” said Principal Harris.

The schools are collecting water for both Aliwal North, and the Senekal community in the Free State, who have suffered a great deal, as this is the worst water crisis they have ever faced.

“Reports tell sad stories of people drinking sewage water and animals being slaughtered to save water. I feel it is our duty to step in and help out our sister school and the pupils of the community,” she explained.

According to Principal Harris, 4 000 litres of water have already been sent to Aliwal North by truck and soon they will dispatch another truck load.

She added that the response to the project has been great and that they will continue to run the project as long as water is needed and the school in Aliwal North has assured them they will give excess water to members of the community.

In conclusion Principal Harris asked that anybody who could assist in transporting the water to please contact the school’s receptionist, Stephanie Sallie.
