For the love of the elderly

SOPHIATOWN – Move over Charlie's Angels, as Women on a Mission are out to make a difference.

Eeufees Oord Old Age Home in Sophiatown is home to elderly residents who are feeling the love more abundantly now that three women started to change the lives of its very special guests.

The chance meeting of Marisah Watson, Michelle Moodley and Jennifer Calib four years ago, not only brought about a great friendship but an initiative set to cater to the needs of the elderly. The three inspiring women started a group called Women on a Mission.

“It was a fluke that this group started actually, Michelle and Jennifer were clients at the hair salon I worked at and they heard that I was involved with the elderly and decided to join,” said Watson.

She explained that on 29 November, Women on a Mission held a Christmas lunch for about 104 members of the elderly at the home. With little assistance and a great deal of tenacity, the three women and their families spoiled the deserving residents to a delicious lunch.

“Some of the elderly feel so neglected and forgotten, that we just wanted to make them feel special and important,” said Watson.

The women provide food for, and spend time with the aged all through the year and are helped by their families.

“Our children are so helpful and supportive – it’s lovely to have them help us serve the elderly,” said Watson.

She concluded by sharing that one of the many events the women will host next year is a pamper day, which will see the elderly women receive some needed pampering.

“We wanted to set aside a day where we would make the grandmothers feel beautiful, so we will be doing their make-up and hair.”
