Water leakages in 2015

MELVILLE – Residents experienced water leakages during the year.

The response time of Joburg Water to fix water leaks was a major concern for residents and Ward Councillors this year. Here are two of the most noteworthy incidents that occurred in 2015.

A pipe that had water spilling all over the street took authorities five days to attend to, was finally fixed on 3 August. The burst pipe in Petlands Road at the Kenworthy Circle in Blairgowrie was reported by Gail Hail from Kenworthy Community Association to Joburg Water for five days without success. Ward 99 Councillor Bruce Herbert insisted that residents only contacted him on 2 August. He highlighted that residents should have contacted him immediately after Joburg Water failed to solve the problem. “I cannot drive around looking for problems in the community. I also have meetings to attend, it is only when residents alert me that I can immediately attend their problems,” said Councillor Herbert.

On 10 November a water meter burst on 5th Street in Melville after reports surfaced on Twitter that clean water was streaming out of a meter. Ward 87 Councillor Amanda Forsythe said, “We are very lucky in Region B to have a good Joburg Water team managed under Mark Kruger.” She elaborated, “So if the leak is still going on for some time, it could possibly mean it was not initially reported through the right channels.”
