VIDEO: School choir to travel to the UK

SOPHIATOWN – The Sparrow Combined School will perform at different audiences during their trip to the United Kingdom.

The Sparrow Combined school choir will travel to the United Kingdom on 20 November where they will be performing at different venues. The Sparrow School Foundation in the UK invites groups of pupils every three years who are talented in different activities at school.

This will be the first time the learners from Sophiatown will travel overseas and perform for international guests after months of rehearsals.

The trip is sponsored by the National lottery, which will sponsor their air travel, transport and food during their two-week trip. Edcon will provide the pupils with bags and clothes.

Vocal coach Badelisile Gaobephe, who is also an author and personal development coach, started the choir for the school in February. She conducted an audition process where pupils had the opportunity to show off their vocal ability.

“I initially selected 41 pupils to be members of the choir. Most pupils were not aware and prepared for the amount of work and commitment that goes into being a choir so some left. The remaining 10 pupils are so dedicated and talented,” Gaobephe said.

So far the learners have performed for churches, school functions, talent shows and ceremonies around Johannesburg in the course of the year.

Sparrow School’s Educational Trust general manager Jacky Galanga said the choir will perform at nine schools and at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. “In the past, cricket teams have also travelled to the UK to play matches against different schools. The purpose of these trips is to broaden the pupils’ world, expose them to people from different cultures and explore their musical talent,” Galanga said.
