UJ students stay up all night discussing a way forward

AUCKLAND PARK – Students refuse to have a private meeting with the UJ vice chancellor.

Between 40 and 50 University of Johannesburg students stayed up all night on 9 November to discuss a way forward in their protest. Earlier in the day, 150 students and 13 workers from UJ spent the day in Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court and were released with all charges dropped, while other students allegedly torched two buses in Joburg CBD.

This after the emotional weekend they had waiting for arrested students and cleaners to be released from Brixton Police Station.

UJ students have now requested a meeting with the University of Johannesburg Vice Chancellor Ihron Rensburg with regards to in-sourcing. “The vice chancellor has agreed only to meet with 10 people or less and we are not having that,” said UJ student Lindokuhle Xulu. He also added that the students do not want a meeting behind closed doors, they would like a public meeting with no secret negotiations. Xulu said that there were about 40–50 students at the UJ society offices.

Another student, Freddy Qamile said that they were locked out of the UJ Kingsway campus and they were only let in at 10 – 11 pm. Qamile said, “The protest will still go on today [10 November] at the UJ Kingsway campus.”
