Community Patrol makes a difference

NEWLANDS – Residents are urged to join the Newlands Community Patrol.

The Newlands Community Patrol group (NCP) called on keen residents who aspire to become part of the patrol team to contact them as they are determined to win the battle against crime.

NCP secretary and treasurer Belinda Venter explained that since its inception in July there had been successful arrests for various crimes.

“The patrol team has been out on patrols regularly and the success thereof can be seen in the downward trend of activity at night time within our area,” she explained.

She indicated that the patrol team had completed a tremendous number of patrol hours. “We salute the men and women that offer up time with their families to patrol and secure the streets of Newlands,” she said.

Patrols take place from the main road to 1st Street and then again from 15th Street to Johannes Road by the circle. Patrollers patrol at their own cost without any subscription fee charged.

The WhatsApp group has also proved to be valuable in the Newlands area as it was successful in drawing the community closer and allowed them to send crime updates out timeously.

The Facebook Page Newlands Community Patrolwas also launched and allows residents to find updates and tips on crime-related matters.

According to Venter, the group was in the process of launching administration and social crime prevention teams.

“We would like to thank the community of Newlands for their input and support over the last few months and would also like to call on those not yet involved to do so as soon as possible,” she concluded.
