UJ is not yet part of the nationwide protest

AUCKLAND PARK – UJ SRC president says it's not part of the Sasco nationwide shut-down protest.

University of Johannesburg (UJ) Student Representative Council (SRC) president Khutso Rammutla indicated that they are not participating in the nationwide fee increment protest.

According to Rammutla, students would only participate in the protest after university management has released the increment figures.

“We are waiting for the management to tell us about the fee increment and if the value is not what we are looking for then we will join the protest,” he concluded.

University spokesperson Herman Esterhuizen emphasised that their students were not participating in the protest.

The university also published a statement on its website on behalf of Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Ihron Rensburg clarifying that the university was currently in consultation with regard to the fees adjustment for 2016.

The statement reads,“Based upon the consultations between the UJ’s Executive Management and the Student Representative Council (SRC), the Council will be presented in November with the respective advice of the Executive Management and the SRC.”

South African Students Congress (Sasco) secretary general Luzuko Buku insisted that 21 October was a national shutdown for all government universities against the fee increment.

“Students need to embark on these protests throughout the country until universities agree on no fee increment at all. We had seen for many years the cost of higher education skyrocketing,” he said.

He further explained that Sasco believes that free education was possible and was calling for all institutions to participate in the shutdown. “No increase at all indicates clearly our goal toward a call for free education,” he concluded.
