A record number to sit for NCS examination this year

BRYANSTON – A total of 150 678 candidates are registered to write this year’s NSC exams at 954 examinations centres in Gauteng.

The National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination commenced on 19 October with computer application technology (CAT) practical exam and will end on 27 November.

Addressing the media at Dimension Data offices in Bryanston on 19 October, the MEC for Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) Phanyaza Lesufi said the department was ready for this year’s examination.

There are 954 examination centres that are registered in the province, and 640 of those are public schools, 238 independent, 61 adult education training (AET), 13 centres for repeating pupils and two correctional service centres.

MEC Lesufi explained that the GDE has registered the highest number of candidates this year which makes it the second highest and behind only KwaZulu-Natal.

“The department has well-established procedures and structures for enhancing the integrity of public examinations. These include Provincial Examination Irregularities Committees (PEIC), District Assessment Irregularities Committees (DAIC) and School Assessment Irregularities Committees (SAIC),” said MEC Lesufi.

According to the MEC, an intensive network of monitoring has been established across the province.

“This network of monitors comprises officials from head office, districts and other stakeholders. The purpose is to ensure that the processes relating to the conduct, administration and management of the examination is fair, credible and of integrity,” MEC Lesufi said.

The results for this year’s exam will be released on 5 January 2016 and the MEC appealed to the public to support the pupils during the examination time.

The marking of exam scripts will start from 29 November until 14 December at 10 marking centres.

He emphasised that the department is working in collaboration with law enforcement agencies in ensuring that all measures were taken to strengthen security during the examination.

The department has also arranged with the municipalities to ensure that load shedding and power cuts do not affect the conduct of the examinations.

The MEC concluded that he would be more excited if they obtain a 90 per cent pass rate.

Meanwhile, the DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education Khume Ramulifho issued a statement encouraging candidates to stay focused during the exam.

“We hope that all examination testing centres and the dispatching of exam papers are ready and secured and that the Department has put in place measures to root out fraud and corruption,” said Ramulifho.
