Police warn of robberies at business premises

PARKVIEW – Police warn that as festive season approaches the incidents of robberies at businesses increases.

Parkview SAPS are warning business owners to be more vigilant and report any suspicious people and vehicles.

“As the festive season is approaching the incidents of robberies increases,” said Parkview SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha.

He explained that police were already experiencing several incidents of robberies at places of business, and intelligence-driven operations were already started as proactive measures to prevent and deal with criminal activities.

“Business people should make sure that all their employees and contractors are screened as some of the armed robberies at businesses are taking place through information,” Sgt Ramovha said.

He explained that very few organised armed robbers would risk their lives or face the risk of apprehension if they are not well informed.

Here are preventative measures to reduce armed robberies at business premises:

  • Never open or close your store at exactly the same time every day
  • Try not to follow the same route to your store every day
  •  Never open the store on your own
  • Ensure that someone armed with panic button monitors the opening and closing procedure away from the store
  • Ensure that you have an adequately fortified drop safe
  • Ensure that the keys to the drop safe are not kept together or on the premises at the same time, except when cash collections are taking place
  • Ensure that cash is continuously removed from the tills throughout the day
  • The cash office must continuously count and drop the cash into the drop safe
  • Cash-ups must be staggered, and not done in one go
  • Never do a full cash-up at the end of the trading day.
