UPDATE: Roosevelt Substation gets a temporary fix

ROOSEVELT PARK –Temporary measures are in place to ensure power to areas affected by the Roosevelt Park Substation fire.

Temporary measures have been put into place to ensure power supply to the areas that were affected by the fire that occurred at the Roosevelt Substation on 18 September.

This is the third time the substation has caught fire this year.

City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele had said the fire occurred due to a cable fault, but has not responded to phone calls and emails since the day of the fire.

He had said City Power technicians were dispatched to the substation immediately and isolated the part of the substation that was affected.

Ward 88 councillor Pat Richards said temporary measures have been taken by City Power, and a permanent solution would be put in place soon.

Richards said the firefighters from the Roosevelt Fire Station heard a big bang and felt the earth shaking when the explosion occurred.

She said they rushed outside and saw a small smouldering fire.

Fire engines from Randburg and Rosebank fire stations also came to assist in putting out the fire and cooling the area down afterwards.

Richards said she has requested City Power to build a new substation as the current one is unreliable and dangerous.

On 18 September residents protested in Beyers Naudé Drive to demand the restoration of their electricity.

Residents paid regular visits to the substation to around 8pm.
