Optometrist helps student in need

NORTHCLIFF – A social-work student receives spectacles to aid in her studies.

Northcliff-based optometrist Sam Schneider generously responded to a call for aid from a student in need.

Sandisiwe Qezu is a second-year social work student at the University of Johannesburg. She supports two younger siblings since the death of her mother many years ago. Qezu is supported by Africa Food for Thought. Her studies were made difficult, however, as her eyesight has been deteriorating over time.

Emmah Mutimutema and Claire Rosewarne from Food for Thought advertised Qezu’s need online through ForGood and were put into contact with Schneider with the help of Lisette Datnow of Do Good and Have Fun– a branch of the Union of Jewish Women.

Schneider and his staff tested Qezu’s eyes and fitted her with a new pair of spectacles at no cost. Qezu was grateful for the donation, “They treated me like a customer even though I wasn’t paying. [Schneider] is such a wonderful person and the staff were so helpful. I’ve never experienced such humility from people. I would like to say thank you to Food for Thought and to Sam Schneider – may he continue to help others the way he helped me.”
