GALLERY: Fairland Community holds Spring Fair meet and greet

FAIRLAND – Community fair gives residents a chance to meet their representatives.

The Fairland community held a Spring Fair on 6 September at Smit Street Park.

The fair allowed the community to get to know the various bodies representing their interests – the Community Policing Forum, local Ward councillors Ingrid Reinten, Laurette van Zijl and Steve Kotzé, local police and rate payers’ associations.

The fair also gave residents an opportunity to discuss solutions to the problems that plague the park – vagrancy, an illegal taxi rank, hawkers and selling of drugs. Residents were given a chance to discuss their concerns with various representative bodies and in turn, representatives were able to talk about their varying upcoming projects.

Despite concerns about the weather, it was a fine day and organiser Yasmine Miemiec was taken aback by the strong support for the fair. Miemiec said, “This was the first fair we planned and we’ve had such a nice turnout. There have been some contentious issues with the park regarding vagrants and drugs, so this is an opportunity for residents to come to the park and to start utilising it.”

Miemiec also mentioned that a Christmas Fair could well be in the works for the community, given the positive response from the day. There was a variety of stalls available with crafts, food and local businesses on display as well as a play area for children.
