Fire breaks out at Helen Joseph Hospital

ROSSMORE – Fire breaks out in a storage room in the admin building.

A fire broke out in a storage room in the admin building at Helen Joseph Hospital n the early hours of 6 September.

Ward 86 counsellor Steve Kotze confirmed firefighters fought the fire from 05.46am and by 06.36am the fire was under control.

Kotze added, “Building regulations SANS 10400 of 1990 Fire Protection shows a long list of fire compliance measures that need to be adhered to and it’s very obvious that at Helen Joseph Hospital this has not been done so the fire protection services inspectorate should visit Helen Joseph and look at, not only storerooms, but the entire hospital because there are patients that are at risk and cannot jump up and run out bed. These fires can spread in a flash and it’s unacceptable. This is not the first time that fires of this nature have happened in hospitals and we would not like to see this become a trend.”

DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health, Jack Bloom, will release an official statement in due course.
