Celebrate Arbor Week by planting a tree

JOBURG – Local residents will be celebrating Arbor Week by planting trees in September.

Local residents will soon be helping to promote the planting and maintenance of indigenous trees throughout the country during Arbor Week, from 1– 7 September.

Residents will also team up and get their hands dirty in an effort to clean the Braamfontein Spruit on 19 September.

The clean-up has been organised by local resident and community associations working closely with City Parks and Zoo,  ADT and Pikitup.

The 25km-long river is said to attract hundreds of cyclist and walkers from various communities.

Two teams will start in Bryanston and end at the Emmarentia Dam.

One of the highlights will be the planting of 200 new trees, which City Power donated.

“We are absolutely delighted with this very generous donation,” said Spruit Day Organiser Ian Tumiel, adding that they were initially only expecting 100 trees.

“Trees absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen – the natural carbon dioxide cycle keeps a balance in the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere,” he said.

Tumiel also said by planting trees, residents will help keep the City green and maintain the City’s status of having the largest man-made forest in the world.

Tumiel also thanked Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo for donating the trees.

Meanwhile, the Road Accident Fund (RAF)[https://www.raf.co.za/Pages/default.aspx] has announced that it will also be planting trees at all provincial hospitals.

The campaign is set to kick off on 1 September at Helen Joseph Hospital [https://plus.google.com/107778716945499873917/about]and the Fund will also assist the facility in further developing a food garden.

RAF has partnered with Food & Tree for Africa (FTFA) and they plan to plant 825 indigenous and fruit tees.
