Local comedians share the stage

MELVILLE – Monday Night Comedy show allows comedians to demonstrate their talent.

It was an evening of jokes in Melville when a group of stand-up comedians entertained audiences at Poppy’s on 24 August.

Local comedians Thabiso Mhlongo, Ebenhaezer Dibakwane, Couch Ninja, Mojack Lehoko, Suhayi Eass, Gavin Kelly, Rea, George Kuda, and Mark shared the stage

They entertained a group of about 50 laughing residents.

The free comedy show called Monday Night Comedy takes place every Monday evening between 8pm and 10pm, and is organised by local young comics Virgil Prins and Gavin Kelly.

Prins said Monday Night Comedy is a grassroots platform for stand-up comedians and South African comedy.

“The gig which runs weekly, serves also as a “testing ground” for South Africa’s more established and professional comedians,” said Prins.

He said the stage has been graced by the likes of Loyiso Gola, Kagiso Lediga, Chester Missing, Trevor Gumbi and Deep Fried Man.

“This is a starting block for young aspiring comedians,” said Prins.

He says it is in its second year tenure but has already gained a steady following, especially by UJ and Wits University students.
