Elderly couple tied up and robbed at gunpoint

SOPHIATOWN – Elderly couple tied up and held at gunpoint while robbers empty their house and drive off with their car.

Three armed men tied up an elderly couple from Sophiatown in the bedroom of their house on 25 August and robbed them of their electronics, jewellery and car.

Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Dauw Steyn said Dave* took a bag of trash outside of his house in Gerty Street at around 8.40am am when three men armed with guns overpowered him.

Steyn said Dave* was forced back into the house and where he and his wife Glynnis* were tied up with cable ties.

“One man was pointing a gun at us while the other two were carrying out our belongings,” a teary Dave* explained in a recording he made to the Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch.

Glynnis* said her rings were pulled off her fingers while her hands were tied up behind her back.

The three men fled in the couple’s white Ford Fiesta rental car after loading it with the stolen goods.

Dave* managed to loosen his hands from the cable ties and ran to his neighbour for help.

Steyn said there were no serious injuries but the couple is devastated and scared.

Sophiatown Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer TJ du Bruin could not be reached at the time for comment. However, Dave* said he has reported the case to the police.
