A Ghanaian businessman is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 18 August for allegedly killing a family member who worked for him on Saturday evening 15 August.
The suspect (51) was arrested at his Melville home on Sunday after the man died in hospital hours later.
According to eyewitnesses, the argument between the two started in a pub and restaurant belonging to the suspect and where the deceased was on duty.
“We couldn’t get it clear what they were arguing about because they argued in one of the Ghanaian languages.
The incident allegedly happened at the Wee-Pub and Restaurant.
According to an eyewitness who did not wish to be named, “The uncle stood up, grabbed a bottle of beer and hit the deceased on the neck. He was bleeding but managed to stand up and went outside where he sat by the entrance, still crying, his uncle followed and hit him again.”
“A Tuk-tuk driver tried to help the man by physically carrying him, but just a few meters away, the suspect stopped them and called a meter taxi to transport him to hospital,” said the witness.
The suspect was described as violent by homeless people in the area.
Some witnesses claimed that it was allegedly not the first time he picked a fight with his nephew.
“This man owns two of the Melville busiest pubs and restaurants,” said a local.
Gauteng Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubele said, “The murder was reported at Brixton Police Station on Saturday. It is alleged that the man stabbed and killed his cousin. He was arrested and charged with murder.”
