A wheelchair for Christmas

FAIRLAND – Children from Wonderland Pre-primary School ask for assistance in collecting tags to buy a wheelchair by Christmas.

Children from Wonderland Pre-primary School are doing their bit for charity by collecting bread tags to buy a wheelchair for a disabled person.

Owner of the school Mandy Vorweg said the school has been collecting the tags in partnership with the Sweetheart Foundation, for over a year in order to teach their pupils to be caring and compassionate.

“We want our children here at our school to be able to make a difference in other people’s lives, as they grow up they must be made aware of other people’s situations,” said Vorweg.

This initiative of collecting bread tags was started by Mary Honeyball from Cape Town, who started collecting bread tags in 2006. Since the tags are made of high-impact polystyrene they have a good recycling value. It takes 200 bread bags full of tags that are packed into 10 black bags or 200 kg of tags to bring in enough money to buy one wheelchair.

The children from Wonderland Pre-primary have thus far collected 18 plastic bags full of bread tags and need a little help from the surrounding community to collect enough to buy a wheelchair.

Vorweg pointed out that they had received a lot of help from the Spar in Fairland who collected the tags from their customers but added that they wanted to reach their goal by December. In addition, she said, they are also collecting cold drink bottle tops and milk carton lids and would appreciate any help that was given in this regard.

She added that anyone who wants to drop off the tags is welcome to do so at the school.

Anyone who would like to help the children from Wonderland Pre-primary to reach their goal of buying a wheelchair by Christmas can get in touch with the school.
