Friends of Alberts Farm holds fundraising fair

GREYMONT – Community group gets proactive to save the local environment.

Friends of Alberts Farm is a group of volunteers made up of people who work or live in the area. The organisation has grown from there and they work closely with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo and Ward councillor Steve Kotzé.

The main project of the group is the interim repairs that need to be done to the dam wall. Chairperson Julie Gouws said, “Whenever we need something from City Parks, they’re very generous. There’s limited resources and we have had to be realistic about it. City Parks has committed to full repairs but at least they are honest and said it is not going to be another two years and we know where we stand. Communication is good from their side.”

Funds need to be raised for the cost of earth-moving equipment. In an ideal situation, a construction company or corporate sponsor that can assist with the cost of hiring that equipment as the project is a huge undertaking. Part of their efforts include the Alberts Farm Spring Fair to be held on 29 August.

Gouws explained that the group is looking to accomplish two things. First, they hope to raise awareness about the issue of the leak in the dam. Second, proceeds from stall holders’ fees and additional funds raised on that day will go toward the project.

Anyone is welcome to attend the fair. It will take place from 9am–4pm on Saturday, 29 August. The entrance to the farm is on 6th Road West in Greymont. Entry is free.
