Montjane claims Belgian open doubles

WESTDENE – Wheelchair tennis player from Westdene Kgothatso ‘KG’ Montjane claims the Belgian open doubles title with her British partner.

South Africa wheelchair tennis player from Westdene Kgothatso ‘KG’ Montjane and her partner from Great Britain Jordanne Whiley claimed their first Belgian Open doubles title on 1 August.

This partnership beat the Nertherlands pair Marjolein Buis and Michaela Spaanstra 5–7, 6–1 and 11–9.

Montjane and whiley were playing together for the first time and believed their combination worked well.

“We get along well on and off court. That is crucial as a doubles team. We always have a lot of fun on court and I really enjoy playing with Jordanne,” said Montjane.

Montjane explained that she was ecstatic that she won the title. “This is my first Belgian Open doubles title. I hope that we can play more tournaments together,” she added.

“It has been a great two weeks of tennis for me after winning the Swiss Open singles and doubles titles last week.”

The 29-year-old was knocked out in the women’s singles semi-final round by her doubles partner Jordanne Whiley 2–6 4–6. It was the first time the world number five defeated Montjane in the five encounters they have met.

In the men’s division, the SA’s top ranked player and sixth-seeded Evans Maripa crashed out in the quarterfinal round. Maripa lost to world number 11 Adam Kellerman of Australia 2–6 4–6.
