‘Boegoespruit’s Best’ has talent

BRAAMFONTEIN – Wits Drama students hold their own at 969 Festival.

BRAAMFONTEIN – The play Boegoespruit Ext 25 was part of the recent 969 Festival  at Wits University. The show opened with a brightly coloured set of Unti’s Spaza Shop and Twala’s Salon and the audience was left in no doubt the performance was going to be vibrant.

The play focused on four people in a township and how they hoped to win a local talent show, win the R100 000 prize money and improve their situation in life. They formed a group, Boegoespruit’s Best, and the roller coaster that is the storyline began. Through monologue and song, the audience was given a glimpse into each character’s life and their daily struggles and the pain each of them carried despite their brave, laughing facades. The play was also distinctly South African with fine nuances of language and expression that only South Africans will fully appreciate.

The four actors, Sharmyan Kassen, Jovan Muthray, Francesca Matthys and Kirsty Marillier are fourth year students at Wits. They have not even finished their degrees yet, and certainly haven’t reached their full potential as actors, so their performances bode very well for the future talent of this country.
