Brixton Flying Squad receives a face lift

BRIXTON – Much needed renovation improves Brixton establishment.

The Brixton Flying Squad recently received refurbishment of their premises in Caroline Street, Brixton. The project was part of ECB Architects’ Public Works Repair and Maintenance Programme, and was completed within the contracted nine months.

ECB Architects principal Erna Botha explained how the project came about. “The Department of Public Works has a standard maintenance programme. The police, for example, put in their request for maintenance and the Department of Public Works prioritises the projects accordingly. It’s not easy to get a project off the ground. It can take years to implement.”

As to how her company came to be involved, Botha explained that “ECB was appointed by the Department [of Public Works] to assess the situation and advise how to make improvements.”

Some improvements were made to suit operational requirements, including new floor finishes, air-conditioning, new paint, new blinds, new burglar bars, a second walk-in safe and one of the buildings had its roof replaced. The property also has a new fence, new boom gate and new car ports. The end result is a better working environment that will certainly enhance service delivery to the public.

Brixton Police Station Commander Colonel Willem van Wyk is very happy with the renovations. “The only things that need to be addressed are the guardhouse that needs the tiles replaced and the newly-installed generator doesn’t keep the lights going, so during load shedding part of the station is pitch black. But otherwise I’m very happy.”

The vehicle and robbery unit, the SAPS water wing, the SAPS vehicle service station and detective services are the operational units benefitted by the refurbishment.
