MTN CEO steps down

FAIRLANDS — A grim outlook for telecommunications giant as its head steps down.

MTN CEO Ahmad Farroukh stepped down on 7 July 2015 while the employee strike intensifies at the company. Farroukh is expected to leave the company at the end of the month.

The strike at the service provider has been going on since the end of May, with employees demanding a 10 per cent wage increase and better bonuses. Services at the telecommunications giant have been severely affected and often disrupted because of the strike.

More than 400 employees working in call centres and the warehouse downed tools to demand the wage increase, payable immediately instead of two tranches.

In May, when the strike began, workers took to the streets to voice their concerns.

“Right now they are only offering a four per cent increase and we want the temporary workers to be made permanent. We also have issues with the different shift, when you work on Sundays or public holidays, you are supposed to be paid double but they don’t do that,” said two of the workers, Karabo Motloung and Tshegofatso Mokoena.
