Tennis’ double sensation

WESTDENE — Local athlete fire up the Israel Open.

Westdene residents Kgothatso ‘KG’ Montjane and Evans Maripa did South Africa proud at the Israel Open on 22 May.

Evans Maripa was triumphant when he joined forces with Marc McCarroll from Great Britain, winning the men’s double title. Their first title together – the men clinched a 4–6, 6–4 and 10–7 win in the final.

The 24-year-old was unsuccessful, however, in the singles draw against Dutchman, Rick Molier.

KG paired up with Katharina Kruger from Germany to secure the women’s doubles title, with a 2–6, 6–2 and 10–6 win. In the singles event, Montjane made it to the semi-final round where she failed to rally a win against Marjolein Buis of the Netherlands.

“KG Montjane and Maripa have made leaps and bounds over the years in the game and we are so proud of their achievements in Israel. We hope they will continue their winning streak next week in Turkey,” said Wheelchair Tennis SA director Holger Losch.

The two move on to Turkey for the 2015 BNP Paribus World Team Cup from 25 –31 May.
