GALLERY: Unity against xenophobia

BRAAMFONTEIN — Hundreds take a stand against the killing of foreigners.

Hundreds of people gathered at Constitution Hill, and braced the chilly Joburg evening of 21 April, to stand in solidarity against the current xenophobic attacks.

Carrying placards and chanting songs of unity, many heeded the call sent out by LeadSA and they filled the open space atop the Constitution Court and reflected on recent tragic events on foreign nationals.

“This is for every person, foreigner or not, to stand together and stand up against xenophobic attacks,” according to Lead SA.

Every person in attendance agreed that everyone is a foreigner somewhere and that violence is not the answer.

Expelled Cosatu Secretary General, Zwelinzima Vavi said the attacks on foreigners only brought shame to South Africa.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura and Executive Mayor Mpho Parks Tau, alongside Talk Radio 702 and 947 presenters, participated in lighting some of the more than 2 000 candles that brought some light amid the hanging dark cloud.

Makhura tweeted, “I commend LeadSA for organising a well attended night vigil against xenophobia. Now all roads lead to the People’s March on Thursday!”

More than six people have been killed since the xenophonic attacks began in Kwa-zulu Natal.
