SOPHIATOWN – Sparrow Schools hosts their first weekend sports day.

Sparrow Remedial Schools hosted their first sport day event to date on a Saturday at their FET campus in Sophiatown on 14 March. Soccer and Netball matches were played against Vuleka school.”We are trying to now make this an annual event where a sporting culture can be built at our school. Sports is an important outlet for a lot of our kids. This is a holistic approach; it is not only about education but also sport, which creates an all-round education,”said Sparrow Schools head of sports Liam Gallagher.

“Today is really not about winning, it is just about the children having a good time and enjoying themselves – that is all that matters,” added Gallagher.

The netball junior girls kicked off the days sporting event followed by the netball senior open match. Half-time entertainment was provided by Sparrow School gumboot dancers.Thereafter the junior soccer match took place, followed by a senior open soccer match.

Principal for Sparrow Combined School Mark Cloete commented, “The reason this day is so important is because it creates interaction between schools and also it’s just something different for everyone away from the normal routine.We want to continue with this and have some more interaction between different schools.”

“I just love soccer. It is the best sport ever, I love Kaizer Chiefs. It is my favourite sport, I have been the captain from when I was in Grade 3.I am so happy that we are getting to play against another school,”said excited Sparrow School’s senior open captain Poelo Chobane.

Managing director of Vuleka Sekolo sa Borokgo(SSB) Schools Melanie Sharland thanks Sparrow Schools for a wonderful sports day.”It really is encouraging to see the student support, team work and skill that has been displayed today. Both our schools (Sparrow and Vuleka) feel that sport plays an important role in the development of a child-really a happy and wonderful day,” expressed Sharland.
