Academic achievers end the year on a symbolic note

WESTDENE – Orban Private School hosts its yearly prize-giving ceremony.

Orban Private School held its end-of-year academic prize-giving ceremony on 4 December.

The evening gave pupils the opportunity to showcase their achievements to proud family and friends.

Teacher and head of the arts and culture department at Orban Michelle Bekker said, “I am extremely proud of all the students this year. There were a lot of tears, hugs, kisses, and happy faces. All-in-all, it was a very special evening for the students”.

The high achievers of the evening included head girl Erin Jacobs (13), Grade 7 dux-pupil and most multifaceted pupil. Her trophy was handed over to her by Orban principal Liz van Tonder. Deputy head boy Thapelo Quambusch (13) was awarded the Principal’s Trophy and Sportsman of the Year. He was deputy head boy.

Other highlights of the evening included a candle-light ceremony.

The ceremony is an Orban Private School tradition where Grade 7 pupils hand over their seniority and responsibilities to the new Grade 7 pupils. This is done by lighting their candles in return.

The Grade 7 pupils proceeded through a darkened hall, each carrying a lit candle. They proceeded toward the Grade 6 pupils and lit their candles. After doing so, the Grade 7 pupils then blew out their own candles, and the Grade 6 pupil’s candles remained lit.

“It symbolises them handing over the responsibility of leadership for the school in 2015,” said Bekker.
