Wake up and smell the sewage

WESTDENE – After weeks of residing next to running sewage, residents of an old age home in Westdene can finally live without the disgusting smell gushing into the homes.

Eeufees Oord Old-Age Home residents can finally live in harmony.

Following two weeks of running sewage in front of their homes, the municipality has finally solved the problem.

“We couldn’t open our windows or doors because it was too smelly,” said Leah Betha, an elderly resident.

Eeufees Oord chairperson Haroon Patal said the situation has been resolved.

“There were problems because the municipality did not have the right equipment to fix the problem… the council was very quick to respond but there is not much they could have done,” he said.

Although the issue has been fixed, the residents say this occurrence is far too familiar.

“This is not the first time it happens, it has happened before on numerous occasions… Now the sewage has been running for close to three weeks. They came to attempt to fix it and left all the waste on the premises and on our flowers,” complained another resident Mrs Williams.

She added that as a result of the unhygienic living conditions, she and other residents suffered from diarrhoea.

Norah Davids was the most affected.

“I don’t know if the municipality wants to wait for someone to die first before they fix a problem because I am the most affected… there where tissues and all the dirt running on my stoep,” said Davids, who has been at Eefeeus Oord for 13 years.

Lesley King, who resides adjacent to Davids said, “It sometimes appears as if management does not care. I phoned the office and told them that I will call the Health Department and they said I am welcome to call,” she said.
