No bail for alleged toddler-killer

SOPHIATOWN - "Murderer," an angry woman in the court muttered as the accused strolled onto the bench. Westbury's community has not forgiven the alleged killer of toddler Luke Tibbetts.

The man accused of allegedly murdering three-year old Luke Tibbetts appeared in the Sophiatown Magistrates’ Court for the last time on 29 August.

The alleged murderer seemed detached and calm, wrapped up well in a grey coat to combat the freezing weather.

A couple of court-attendees muttered under their breath at his appearance, and one or two cried, “Murderer!”

Prosecutor Deon van Wyk informed the court that the accused would not be applying for bail.

Magistrate Koos Pretorius said that the case will be transferred to the Johannesburg High Court, and he would appear on 3 September. This murder charge will be added to the 18 other charges the accused will be facing.

The defence attorney – Rowan Methe – has resigned from his client’s services, and a new defence team will be appointed.

The accused will remain in custody until his appearance in the High Court.
