From Mexican tacos to Brazilian espetadas, Latin food has gained popularity globally in recent months, and now you can try the authentic flavours of latin cuisine at the third Fiesta Latina.

This is South Africa’s annual Latin Festival, which is happening on 13 September at the Argentinean Association at Mark’s Park, Emmarentia. This family friendly event celebrates Joburg’s growing Latino community, and shares their culture, through a variety live entertainment, cultural dances and traditional cuisines.

Visitors can sample food from Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia at the festival. Indulge in a tasty Argentinean ‘asado’ – a unique way of grilling meat in delicate spices of salt, lemon and pepper, over simmering coals until tender and flavourful. Try a golden crunchy Colombian ’empanada’ crammed with delicious fillings, and satisfy your sweet tooth with a Peruvian ‘alfajor’ – a delicate sandwich cookie filled with traditional ‘manjar blanco’ and made according to a family recipe handed down generations.

Bring a picnic blanket, and find a shady spot on the grass, as a smorgasbord of folkloric and contemporary entertainment, from dance to live music, colourful traditional costumes, games, and many other unique, fun attractions will happen throughout the day.

What adds to the authenticity of Fiesta Latina, is the intimate park-like family reunion setting, typical of community get-togethers in South America, where people of all ages, can join the merriment, and indulge in a full South American experience.

“Through Fiesta Latina, we want to share our heritage with other communities and locals,” explained festival organiser, César Alvarado, a Peruvian performer and entertainer living in Johannesburg, and one of the more active members of the Latin community in South Africa. “This is the way people enjoy life and fiestas back home. It’s laid-back and it’s vibrant, all at the same time. It’s about family, wholesome fun, and of course delicious food.”

Fiesta Latina starts at 1pm. Tickets are R60 and children under five enter free. No dogs or food and beverages from outside the premises will be allowed.
