Intense action on day three of World Cup – Residents comment

JOBURG – Italy beats England 2 - 1. Residents show their support.

Four intensive matches were played on day three of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, on 14 June.

Colombia first beat Greece 3 – 0 in group C.

Armero wrong-footed Greece keeper Karnezis, before scoring off a deflection in the fifth minute.

Gutierrez finished from close range in the 58th minute following a corner, and Rodriguez shot one in from 16m in additional time.

Costa Rica then pulled off an upset against Uruguay, with the Central Americans winning 3 – 1 in group D. Cavani scored for Uruguay through a penalty in the 24th minute.

Then Campbell fired one in powerfully passed the motionless Uruguayan keeper, Muslera, in the 54th minute.

Duarte put Costa Rica ahead in the 57th minute with a header, and Urena sealed the victory after a pass sent him through the defence in the 84th minute.

Italy showed resilience and skill to beat England 2 – 1 in group D.

Marchisio first scored for Italy in the 35th minute, shooting low.

Sturridge equalised for England in the 37th minute after a break by Rooney.

Balotelli won Italy the match with a beautiful header from a cross in the 50th minute.

Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) beat Japan 2 – 1 in group C.

Honda scored for Japan in the 16th minute, firing in from the edge of the box.

Aurier then set up both of Côte d’Ivoire’s goals with crosses, Bony heading in from close range in the 64th minute, and Gervinho heading the winner in the 66th minute.

Spokesperson for Randburg Football Club Marlon Abrahams said that he is personally supporting Italy during the world cup.

“There is a philosophy in Italy,” he said. “It is called Bella figura, where the people have an innate style. They know how to be cool, and their team plays like that.”
