How to style a coffee table

This key piece of living room furniture can be dressed up or down to express your décor style and personality. Here are some guidelines to get a great look…

Coffee tables are one of the most functional pieces of furniture in a home and they’re also one of the most fun to decorate, because they’re easy to adjust and update!

If you want yours to look stylish, follow the simple tips below:

Keep it balanced – A symmetrical display is much easier on the eye and can create a sense of harmony and flow. To achieve this, divide your coffee table into three sections (two if it’s a circle, four if it’s a square) and decorate each one individually. Experiment with one central object such as a plant or stack of books, and place smaller displays of equal size on either side of it. These objects don’t need to be the same but should complement each other in terms of size and tone.

Keep it simple – Less is more when it comes to styling coffee tables, especially as they’re meant to be usable too. Leave room for décor items to breathe – that way you won’t overwhelm the table or distract the eye.

Keep it low – Avoid large items that will obstruct your view of the person sitting opposite you. If you really want a tall object, make sure it’s something slender like flower stems or branches that can be seen through.

Keep it real – Fresh blooms or plants add an appealing “live” element to coffee table displays and are wonderful for introducing pops of colour and scent.

Keep it neat – An easy way to create a unified, elegant display is by placing the items on your table neatly in a tray. Breathing room is important here too, so don’t overcrowd it.

Keep it interesting – Create visual appeal by mixing shapes and textures on the coffee table. Pair curved items with straight, matte with shiny and textured with smooth. Play around with objects such as flowers, vases, books, sculptures, candles and crystals.

Keep it true to you – Make your coffee table uniquely yours by choosing items that reflect your personality, capture your interest and suit your décor taste.
