Practical new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe revealed
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will be built at the BMW Group Plant Munich alongside the fully electric i4 and 3 Series sedan.
Buyers seeking a more practical 4 Series are sorted as German carmaker BMW has taken the veil off its new Gran Coupe variant.
Earmarked to go on sale in Mzansi in the fourth quarter of the year, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will be built at the BMW Group Plant Munich alongside the fully electric i4 and 3 Series sedan.
It is 4 783 mm long, 1 852 mm wide as well as 1 442 mm high making it 143 mm longer, 27 mm wider and 53 mm taller than its predecessor. Its track has also grown to 1 595 mm at the front (+50 mm) and 1 623 mm at the rear (+29 mm).
The wheelbase of 2,856 millimetres is 46 mm longer than the predecessor’s and 5 mm more than the figure for the 3 Series Sedan.
The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé offers 470 litres of boot space, the primary capacity in the directly viewable area of the boot has grown by 39 litres. Load capacity can be expanded to a maximum of 1,290 litres by folding down the sections of the rear backrest, with its standard 40 : 20: 40 split.
Only three engine options will be offered locally, the BMW 420I, 420d and M440i xDrive.
The 420i houses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 135 kW and 300 Nm of torque. It is credited with a 7.9 seconds sprint from standstill to 100 km/h as well as a top speed of 235 km/h. The 420d features a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine with 140 kW and 400 Nm. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint task in 7.3 seconds en route to a top speed of 235 km/h.
The M440i xDrive with 275 kW and 500 Nm sent to all four wheels via the xDrive system. It dashes off the line to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds with its top speed capped at 250 km/h.
All the engines team up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard.
