Taking care of the skin is a conundrum many adults, with years of experience, don’t have any answer to. Taking care of a baby’s skin can be even more complicated. Many children are born with eczema and the skin becomes very dry, especially. Summer is well on its way and many kids will have a heat rash. There are so many skin issues that may attack your child. That is why you should keep your baby or child’s skin adequately cared for to avoid many skin ailments. Follow these skincare tips for kids.

Key to glowing skin

  • When your baby eats, they mess their face and when you remove the food with wipes, it leaves it dry. Their skin is also left dry when you wipe their nose when they have a runny nose. The constant wiping leaves skin dry with a chapped nose and cheeks. To soothe and prevent a chapped nose and cheeks, take a facecloth soaked in warm water and gently dab the affected area. Once the skin is warm, apply your child’s moisturiser or aqueous cream, gently until it has been absorbed. Follow this same routine two to three times a day, including when they wake up or go to bed.
  • Continue giving your child as much water as they need. Water nourishes their body and skin.
  • There is an urge by parents to overdress the child because a baby cannot speak and say when they feel cold or hot. As the caregiver, you have to assume how they feel. It is easy for them to get a heat rash, which is characterised by itchy red bumps arising from clogged sweat glands. The best way to combat this, is to dress your baby in breathable layers, which can be removed if the weather warms up. Watch out for overheating, especially in little babies.
  • Take time to pamper at bath time. Use this special time with your children to indulge their skin. Rub aqueous cream generously into your child’s skin before bathing. Make sure that the bath water isn’t too hot. Once bath time is over, pat your child’s skin dry and apply another layer of cream before dressing.
  • There are many soaps and skin care products on the market, which promise miracles. Avoid harsh soap products especially if your child’s skin is dry. To moisturise, use a gentle and mild moisturising lotion, that is preferably fragrance free.
  • Sunscreen is more important now as we approach summer. The sun can cause unnecessary damage to the skin of your little one, so apply generously.
