Eastern extravaganza set to empower women

BRIGHT colours and the jingle of bracelets and other adornments were the order of the day as the South African Women’s Forte (SAWF) prepares for its annual charity fundraiser.
This year the SAWF is hoping to empower young school-going women by providing them with sanitary products.
Fittingly, the altruistic group will be hosting an Arabian themed fundraiser in Women’s Month in support of the Comfort with Dignity for Girls Project.
The prime objective of the project is to purchase and distribute as many washable sanitary panty packs to young women in disadvantaged communities.

Research has shown that 25 per cent of the country’s seven million school-going women miss out on one week of school each month due to menstruation, said the La Lucia resident and the organisation’s president Michelle Michael.
She explained that many of these women are unable to afford conventional sanitary products.
“As they are missing so much time from school it is almost impossible for them to catch up, and education is the cornerstone of every society. By providing these girls with sanitary products we are not only restoring their dignity, but we are helping to educate and empower them,” added Micheal.
“We believe that by doing doing so we can also help make a positive impact on violence against women and children.”

The products, which can be washed and reused for up to five years costs R150 each.
The event, Arabian Nights, will be held at Tsogo Sun Elangeni on Saturday, 2 September at 6pm. Entrance costs R450.
The SAWF is a non-profit organisation that was launched in 1997. Each year the organisation hosts an event to raise funds for a worthy project or charity.
