THE Umhlanga Food and Music Festival is back and will take place, once again, at Chris Saunders Park. This year marks the second time the festival is being held.

South Africa’s finest craft beers and wines will be on sale, accompanied by a wide range of tantalising food stalls.

The Kickstands and Majozi will get the crowds warmed up, but it will be South African music heavyweights, Just Jinjer, who organisers say are

going to ‘bring the park down’.

The festival will take place on Saturday, 2 May and tickets are available from Computicket in advance at R100, or R150 on the day or at the at the door. The event starts at noon and runs until 8pm.

The Northglen News is giving away five sets of double tickets to the festival. To enter fill in the form at the end (competition closes April 27).

Just Jinjer’s front man asked the Northglen News, ‘So what’s your question?’, and we fired away:

What things don’t you like doing, name two:

Reporting to the police that my wallet is lost or stolen. Being told what to do.

Tell us about a time when things didn’t go the way you wanted:

It happens constantly. Life seldom goes the way you want to go. It’s all about how you roll with the punches and how you stand up in the face of adversity.

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?

I hear music in my head all the time. Loud as a symphony in my back seat!

What’s your strongest memory of your childhood?

Waking up on the Bluff and getting in the water before school, knowing even then that I was truly blessed.

What do you dislike about South Africa?

Only the violence and corruption and peoples’ general inability to move on and learn from the past, and our sucky passports.

What makes you angry?

Very little, but animal abuse and neglect has often made me question what I would be willing to go to prison for.

Besides your job, what are you most passionate about?

I’m passionate about trying to be as nice as possible to everyone while I’m on this earth. I love the ocean. I also love gaming (guilty pleasure).

Name one misconception you think people have about you:

I think people think I’m a much more hardcore rockstar than I really am. Sure, I have my moments, but in general I am very happy being alone with my dogs doing very un-rockstar things like cooking and gardening, and knitting.

Some advice to people who want to follow your path; what are three things you should never do in this business?

Don’t ever sign your music rights away. Spend every last cent you have on very qualified music lawyer (must be very specifically an accredited music lawyer) to handle your business. Do everything because you love it, not because you need to make a living for it. When money is not your motivation or obsession, you will find that the universe will reward you adequately in time.

What do you envision yourself doing when you turn 80?

If I make it to that age I hope to still be wearing whatever I want and getting up to a little mischief now and then!
